Privacy Coin Zcash Surges 70% in a Week as AI Fears Rise
Zcash (ZEC) has rallied approximately 70% over the past seven days, outpacing most major cryptocurrencies as investors flock to privacy-focused assets. The surge comes amid growing concerns about artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and increased financial surveillance, according to Pav Hundal, lead analyst at Australian crypto exchange Swyftx.
What Drove the Rally
The sharp price increase in Zcash reflects a broader shift in sentiment toward privacy coins. Hundal noted that fears around AI-driven data collection and the potential for quantum computers to break existing encryption have reignited interest in assets that prioritize anonymity.
Zcash, launched in 2016, uses zero-knowledge proofs to allow users to transact without revealing sender, receiver, or amount. This feature has become increasingly attractive as governments and corporations expand their surveillance capabilities.
“People are waking up to the reality that their financial privacy is under threat,” Hundal said in a statement. “Zcash offers a solution that is both technologically robust and battle-tested.”
Market Context and Broader Trends
The rally in Zcash comes at a time when the overall cryptocurrency market has been relatively subdued. Bitcoin has traded sideways near $60,000, while Ethereum has struggled to break above $3,000. Privacy coins, including Monero and Dash, have also seen modest gains, but Zcash has been the standout performer.
Data from CoinGecko shows that Zcash’s trading volume has surged to over $500 million in the past 24 hours, up from an average of $100 million earlier this month. The increase in volume suggests strong retail and institutional interest.
Privacy coins have historically faced regulatory headwinds, with some exchanges delisting them due to compliance concerns. However, the current rally indicates that investors are prioritizing privacy over regulatory ease.
Technical Analysis and Price Levels
From a technical perspective, Zcash broke out of a multi-month consolidation range around $20 and has now reached resistance near $35. The next key level is $40, a price not seen since early 2022. If the rally continues, analysts expect Zcash to test $50 in the coming weeks.
Support levels are at $28 and $25, which could provide a floor if profit-taking occurs. The relative strength index (RSI) is above 70, indicating that the asset is overbought in the short term, but strong momentum could sustain the uptrend.
Outlook and Summary
The surge in Zcash highlights a growing demand for financial privacy in an era of increasing digital surveillance. While regulatory risks remain, the rally underscores the market’s appetite for assets that offer anonymity and security.
Looking ahead, Zcash’s price will likely depend on broader market conditions and any regulatory developments. However, the current momentum suggests that privacy coins could continue to outperform as concerns about AI and quantum computing persist.
