Bitcoin Hits $78K on ETF Inflows, Fed Pivot Bets $BTC

Bitcoin’s 23% Weekly Surge to $78K Reshapes Crypto Sentiment

Bitcoin jumped roughly 23% over the past seven days, trading near $78,000 as of Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026. Ethereum and major altcoins followed, with ETH gaining double digits during the same period, though exact figures were not immediately available.

The rally accelerated after a week of strong crypto ETF inflows, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recording their largest net weekly intake since March. Analysts at multiple research desks attributed the move to a softer U.S. dollar outlook, Treasury buyback programs, and reduced expectations for Federal Reserve tightening.

ETF Inflows and Liquidity Hopes Drive Institutional Demand

Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of roughly $1.2 billion during the week ending Aug. 21, according to preliminary data from asset managers. This marks the third consecutive week of positive flows, signaling renewed institutional appetite after a sluggish summer.

“The ETF channel is providing a steady bid underneath the market,” said one derivatives strategist at a major crypto prime broker, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Institutions are using the dip zones to add exposure, and the liquidity backdrop is improving as Treasury buybacks inject cash into the system.”

The U.S. Treasury’s buyback program, which resumed in August, has helped ease funding pressures in short-term money markets. That, combined with softer consumer price prints earlier in the month, has led traders to price in a higher probability of rate cuts by year-end. The CME FedWatch tool now shows a 72% chance of a 25-basis-point cut at the December FOMC meeting, up from 58% a week ago.

Profit-Taking and Long-Term Holder Selling Pose Risks

Despite the bullish momentum, analysts warn that profit-taking could cap upside. On-chain data from Glassnode shows that long-term holders (entities holding coins for more than 155 days) have reduced their supply by 0.4% over the past week, a sign that some investors are locking in gains after the sharp move.

“The rally is being driven by new demand, but we’re seeing a notable uptick in older coins moving to exchanges,” said a market analyst at a London-based digital asset firm. “If that selling pressure intensifies, the market could see a pullback to the $72K–$74K support zone.”

Exchange reserves for Bitcoin have risen by 2.1% since Aug. 15, indicating that some holders are preparing to sell. However, the current level remains near multi-year lows, suggesting that the overall supply is still constrained.

Altcoin Rally and Ethereum’s Role in the Move

Ethereum climbed to approximately $4,850 on Aug. 22, up 18% over the same seven-day window. The ETH/BTC ratio ticked higher, reflecting a rotation into riskier assets as sentiment improves.

Major altcoins, including Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA), also posted double-digit gains. SOL traded near $210, while ADA surpassed $1.20. The broad-based advance suggests that the rally is not solely Bitcoin-driven, but rather a liquidity-driven move across the crypto complex.

Options markets are pricing in continued upside volatility. The one-month 25-delta risk reversal for Bitcoin turned positive for the first time since early June, indicating that call options are now more expensive than puts. This shift suggests that traders are positioning for further gains rather than hedging downside.

Upcoming Crypto Events to Watch This Weekend

This weekend, several Bitcoin-themed events are scheduled that could influence sentiment. The Bitcoin Vibecamp conference, held from Aug. 17–22 in Roatan, Honduras, wraps up today, bringing together developers and innovators focused on Bitcoin, AI, and open-source technology. While not a market-moving event, it underscores ongoing grassroots development.

On Aug. 22, the Learning Bitcoin 2026 conference begins in Vancouver, Canada, running through Aug. 23. The event offers workshops and expert-led sessions aimed at educating newcomers. Meanwhile, the My First Bitcoin Unconference takes place in Surabaya, Indonesia, also on Aug. 22, focusing on community education and adoption.

What Could Break the Rally: Key Levels and Fed Signals

The immediate focus for traders is whether Bitcoin can hold above $78,000. A daily close above $80,000 would likely trigger another leg higher, with some analysts targeting $85,000. Conversely, a break below $75,000 could reverse the short-term trend.

The next major catalyst is the Fed’s annual Jackson Hole symposium, scheduled for Aug. 28–30. Comments from Chair Powell on rate policy will be closely watched. A hawkish surprise could strengthen the dollar and pressure crypto markets; a dovish tone would likely extend the rally. Additionally, ETF flow data for the coming week will provide a real-time gauge of institutional demand.
