Strategy’s Bitcoin Bet Pays Off as Stock Hits Two-Month High
On Friday, August 21, 2026, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) saw its common stock surge 10% in pre-market trading to $120, the highest level in two months. The jump follows a sharp rally in Bitcoin, which has pushed the company’s massive cryptocurrency holdings into a paper profit of approximately $1.4 billion.
Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, has been accumulating the asset since 2020. As of the latest data, the company holds over 226,000 BTC, acquired at an average price of around $36,000 per coin. With Bitcoin trading near $68,000 on Friday, the unrealized gain on those holdings stands at roughly $1.4 billion.
Why Bitcoin’s Rally Is Boosting Strategy’s Valuation
The stock’s reaction underscores how tightly Strategy’s share price is correlated with Bitcoin’s performance. As a leveraged play on the cryptocurrency, every percentage point move in Bitcoin tends to amplify in MSTR. Friday’s 10% jump reflects not just the paper profit but also investor sentiment that Bitcoin’s uptrend may continue.
Market analysts point to several factors driving Bitcoin’s recent strength. The ongoing Bitcoin Vibecamp conference in Roatan, Honduras (August 17–22) and PlebLab Startup Day in Guadalajara (August 20–21) highlight growing developer and entrepreneurial interest, but the more immediate catalyst appears to be macroeconomic: a weaker U.S. dollar and renewed institutional inflows into crypto funds.
Profit Milestone: $1.4 Billion Unrealized Gain
The $1.4 billion profit figure is a notable milestone for Strategy. After a brutal 2022 bear market that left the company underwater on its holdings, the recent rally has flipped the ledger back into positive territory. The company’s cost basis, including fees, is approximately $7.9 billion, while the current market value of its holdings exceeds $15.3 billion.
This paper gain, however, is not realized. Strategy has not sold any Bitcoin since 2021, and CEO Michael Saylor has repeatedly stated his intention to hold indefinitely. The company has instead used its Bitcoin as collateral for debt offerings, a strategy that carries risks if prices fall sharply.
Stock Valuation: A Premium That Could Narrow
Strategy’s market capitalization now stands at roughly $22 billion, implying a premium of about 40% over the value of its Bitcoin holdings. That premium reflects expectations of future appreciation and the company’s ability to generate cash flow through software sales, though the software business has shrunk in recent years.
If Bitcoin continues to rise, the premium may widen as investors bid up the stock. Conversely, a sharp pullback in BTC could compress the premium, as seen in 2022 when MSTR traded at a discount to its Bitcoin value. Friday’s pre-market move suggests traders are betting on the former.
What to Watch: Bitcoin’s Next Resistance at $70,000
For the rally to extend, Bitcoin needs to break above the psychological $70,000 level, a price not seen since June. A sustained close above that mark could trigger another leg higher, adding to Strategy’s paper profit and pushing the stock toward its all-time high of $125 set in February.
Investors should also monitor the Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole symposium next week, where rate-cut signals could fuel further crypto gains. If Bitcoin fails to hold $65,000, however, the profit narrative could quickly reverse, and MSTR’s premium may evaporate.
