In a spectacle that felt ripped from a late-night sketch, Elon Musk and Donald Trump took their feud to a new level yesterday, trading blows—both figurative and literal—across social media and in the public eye.

It all kicked off when Musk ripped into Trump’s flagship spending-and-tax package, labeling it a “disgusting abomination” in a series of posts on X. Trump, never one to back down, shot back by accusing Musk of ingratitude, even suggesting he could pull federal contracts from Tesla and SpaceX if things didn’t shape up. From policy criticism it quickly spiraled into personal jabs: Musk hinted that without him, Trump wouldn’t have won in 2024, while Trump countered that Musk’s ego was out of control.

By late afternoon, Musk was on a roll. He reposted a tweet from years ago in which Trump himself complained about debt-ceiling extensions, captioning it mockingly with “Wise words,” to underline what he saw as sheer hypocrisy.

Then, as the sun dipped low, Musk dropped a bombshell: posting a clip referencing Trump’s alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein in the early ’90s, and cheekily remarking that maybe those ties explained why certain documents remain sealed. Whether Musk believed there was something truly hidden or just wanted to goad Trump into a rage is anyone’s guess, but the move certainly put the entire feud on a more scandalous footing.

Trump didn’t take it lying down. He threatened to yank SpaceX’s next round of funding, insinuating that a leader of a global superpower shouldn’t be embarrassed by one billionaire’s tweets. Musk, in turn, floated the idea of decommissioning the Dragon spacecraft unless things changed—and even mused out loud about forming a new centrist party for “the 80% in the middle” who are fed up with both extremes.

By the time night fell, cable news was ablaze with commentators debating everything from the wisdom of mixing space exploration with political vendettas to the implications of dragging Epstein’s name back into the spotlight. For most observers, the real takeaway was how these two forces—one the world’s richest man and the other a former president—are willing to leverage everything they’ve got (including old tweets and old scandals) to try and one-up each other.

Whether this feud de-escalates or sets off another round of accusations remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: they’ve made it very clear that neither is afraid to go nuclear on the other.
